Indeed. The whole issue of "ebony" or "black" is so problematic that it would take more effort than any of us would care to make to begin to even sort it out. First, are we talking strictly skin-color and facial features, ie racial characteristics? Or are we bringing ethnicity into it, eg Latina, Arab etc. In the States "black" and by extension "ebony" generally equates with African-Americans descended in the main from West African slaves. This is a parochial perspective, i know, but a very meaningful one, at least in my society. Look at all the seemingly absurd confusion surrounding Barack Obama, half East African, half White American... Within Arab or Latin American societies, it's culture not race which is the deciding factor, although there is some discrimination within these groups based on skin color. One simple solution is to simply let people define themselves. I'm sure that Dunia Montenegro sees herself as both "ebony" or black and Latin (Brazilian/Hispanic). Too me, she has a classic cafe-au-lait complexion indicative of a mixed background, not the darker, ebony features of some African-Americans or Africans.. But it's her thread and i'm happy to follow her lead in presenting "ebony" favorites...
BTW: i've heard all sorts of contradictory information about Julia Chanel's ethnic background, but that should all be cleared up when her biography is published
