Why not make links open in a new tab?

Why not make links in a forum thread open in a new tab (in for example firefox) instead of opening in the same window?
Eurobabeforum must be the only forum I know where links open and replace the existing window.
Somehow thumbnails to for instance imagevenue DO open in a new tab (like it suppose to be).

it seems to depend on how you create the link


these 2 look the same but

the first will open in this tab (I just dropped the link in as text)
http://www.bbc.co.uk/


whereas this will open in an new tab (I clicked the URL button and put the same text in between the tags that appear)
http://www.bbc.co.uk/
