ok, but for this I would have to reopen registrations, right?

Which means there will be a window open for others to register themselves, while I am registering some others.

@ nop: Is there really no other option???

Each time I open up registrations in order to register those who applied, at least the same amount of other people register themselves (which is pointless, because it leads not to an activated account, but apparently people are plain stupid and neither willing nor able to read)......... And then these very people come up and mail me a copy of their "registration" mail and demand access. Which is not really a good thing, if you ask me.

So, please, if you can find another way for the registration it would be a huge improvement.

Anyway, thanks in advance.

This mod should be doing what you want:

http://www.phpbb.com/mods/db/index.php?i=misc&mode=display&contrib_id=2964

I've just installed it and it seems to be compatible with our board's version (3.0.5)
So now you have an "add user" function in the "Users and Groups" menu 8)

A little statistic ......

Postby Mr_White on Tue Sep 15, 2009 2:33 pm

Just out of curiosity I checked the Newbies (in therms of those who got in after we changed the rules):

180 new users since.
From these 50 already made at least 1 posting (which is already some 27,77 %) - compared to what was before (with less than 1% of the newbies ever making a posting), this is already something.
I would even call it a big improvement.
Plus with some of those Newbies we already got postings with very good and useful (in the meaning of: Info for the main page) contents.

And I guess it will be even more, once I will push those who promised to participate and did not so far..... I am already thinking of limiting their access after 4 weeks of non-posting to parts of the forum only (thus going along with a nice PM telling them why and how) and after another 4 weeks they are out for good [of course with the option to register again, but once I see the same persons coming back again and again after some 8 weeks of silence I sure will find an option to keep them out once and for all.......].

One question stays: Some people emailed me and wrote that without an open (visible for everybody) forum they would stop using EBI as source at all and go elsewhere. Not many though (some 8 or 9 mails were like this), but nevertheless I´d like to ask if there is less traffic for the main page since the change?

Nothing noticeable about traffic on main page.
For sure, there is now less database accesses and cpu activity.

those who do go see somewhere else dont bother threatening to do so, they just do. those who email that think they have some leverage. they also probably think the akropolis is a dance club in greece
