Today on English television (BBC) was the daily quiz "Eggheads".
Here a question on geography for a bright woman, around 25 years old.

Q: "The Netherlands is bordered by Belgium and which other country?"
Multiple choice answers: A.Germany B. France C.Denmark

Woman: "Ooooh. The Netherlands.... That is difficult....."

Quizmaster: "Come on, you do know where the Netherlands are, don't you?"

Woman: "Yeah, I think the Netherlands are to the right of England....
Well, I really have no idea. So I must guess. And I say: France !"

It is astounding, hilarious but also sad that a reasonably bright,
25 year old English person is unfamiliar with the geography
of an important nearby country in continental Europe.

Yet it is indicative of the English traditional anti-Europe mindset,
as reflected in their outdated and flawed educational system.

English schoolkids learn everything about the British Isles,
the Common Wealth (Australia, Canada etc) and the USA.

Continental Europe --with its languages, history and geography--
is considered irrelevant.

I think same could happen in different countries too, not only England. I already saw similar stories on youtube etc

Ahahaha! I always hoped that porn will contribute to improve people's knowledge of geography, transforming unknown places into more famous...just for curiosity or because there are gorgeous ladies.

Years ago my US friends (and not just Bush or Michael Jackson) had problems to see the difference between Bucharest and Budapest. Now, after few shootings, they know...
But still there are problems when I say that I go to Cluj (or Kolosvar) to visit some friends (and discover how many gorgeous and open-minded students are here). I let you wonder...so that one day you too will come here...and likely you will not leave disappointed 8)
But do not come shooting here...it's still better to invite these ladies to BUD.

Anyway Cluj it's far from Netherlands and the grey England

Hmmm i think that lack of knowledge may be just specific to the contestant as I am sure most British people have a fairly good understanding of geography?!
Still, a pretty embarassing lack of knowledge from a compatriot.

Reminds of when a Australian friend i knew who went travelling round the States, at a party she was a little flummaxed when an American girl asked her 'So how long did it take you to drive here from Australia?!' - her jaw dropped - sadly a true story!

There was a survey about 10 years ago that found 40% of Americans couldn't identify America on an unlabeled globe. So maybe being insular isn't just us.

Xenomorgue we're not quite as bigoted as you make us out. When I was at school we didn't just learn about the "Empire" and the USA (In-fact we didn't do much on American History, people etc except what was needed in geography). Since in my day Geography was an elective subject then you didn't get forced to do it once you had selected the subjects you wanted to study. If she had chosen not to study Geography then she may well not remember the borders of all European states.

If your basing the your ideas about us on the so called "Daily Mail" reader it's not surprising that you think we are a bunch of insular bigots. Mind you I do think these people have a point when they point out that because history taught in schools is European history from 1900 it's wrong that the kids don't know about our long history, nothing about our old kings and queens and even that one child in three doesn't even realize that there was a British empire.

Here's a geographical location that I'm surprised hasn't shown up in a film...
