I never understood, why so many women look down on (female) porn stars.
Its one of the few movie genres, where women play the most important part.
Sure, there is quite a lot of ugly stuff produced, but very good movies too. Bad porn movies cant be a reason to damnate porn in general.
Nobody is demanding : "Ban western movies !", because even 99% of western movies are crap.

If women arent satisfied with the recent porn movies, they should produce better movies - some women do this.

That's a good & big question, Caroline. I could mention factors like latent envy, snobbery, and the force of traditional morality, but these are simplistic notions, just scratching the surface. I suppose that some women get an ego boost from looking down on other women as sluts & whores (as many men do with rather different underlying motivations). And what better target for them than porn-stars? Still it's a complex issue, perhaps best explored initially by other women such as yourself.

I was reminded of this old article which treats this topic nicely. Unfortunately, i could only find this truncated abstract, but it's worth a read if you're really interested and can dig it up in a good library.

Also, i remember Camilia Paglia, an American celebrity academic, was quite a vocal champion of a sort of pro-porn feminism back in the 90's, but i haven't heard anything from her for years.

I didnt knew her until a few months ago, when she warned women to vote for Hillary Clinton. I am watching porn since my 14th birthday, for 15 years now, and it really has improved my life. Ive met some (former) dutch teen porn models, very friendly, liberal minded, intelligent and sensitive young women.

But too many people have prejudices, that are carved in stone.

My mother is such a conservative anti-porn feminist, I call it stalin-feminism. Its useless to talk with her about this topic.

I am in favour of gender equality. Women should have the same opportunities in life as men. Therefore feminists have my sympathy when they tackle issues like job discrimination (the glass ceiling) and differences in wages, pension rights etc. Other important issues for advancing the cause of women are maternity leave and child care. I would welcome it if feminists focused on these key issues.

Years ago, I always had feelings of guilt when I enjoyed porn, but excluding the anti-porn campaigns and the conservative attitude toward sex, I supported feminism. So I am glad, that a new branch of feminism is directing the feminism back to its northern european roots of the 60s and 70s.

Women fought for the legalization of porn too. Even if I dont like everything in porn at all, there is too much degrading stuff, but if more and more women will buy/rent/support good porn, the market will change too.
