Preventing spam attack !

Postby paroxysmia on Sun Oct 26, 2008 10:22 am

Hi.

I saw EBI has been spammed a 2nd time this night.

I hope you deleted the spammer messages only and not all messages posted between xHx et yHy.

Anyway maybe it's possible to upgrade phpBB2 in phpBB3 with more security features.

Or a second possibility is to install a mod about account creation to prevent spamming.

Bye.

It's not as if Nop and Frigo don't know, they're working on it.

As for deleting the messages, we just re-installed the most recent back-up, it would have taken hours of work just to save a couple of posts.

If you or others have suggestions, contact Frigo or Nop.

Actually, the 1st time we re-installed a recent backup.
The 2nd time, we deleted only spammer posts.
Indeed we are considering an upgrade to phpBB3.

you can stop a lot of the spamming by only alowing a user to create new threads with a 5 min intival between each new thread. At the verry least they will only be able to do 12 per hour.

You may need to watch the IP no. to stop the same person using multiple usernames to get arround this.

Bots use spoofed ips, banning them won't help.

Of course we don't want to solve a problem by making posting for regular users a pain in the ass.

I ment creating completly new threads, not adding posts to existing ones, for the very reason quoted ie not to stop the normal working of the bbs.

People add to threads all the time but apart from the admins (who can be exempted from restrictions) we don't create too many new ones at once.

Ok, let Nop have a look at it.

I think the best way to go is to install one of the anti-spam mods.

Are those users called "Google [bot]" connected with that attack?
Or what is [bot]?

No it's Google, Yahoo and the other search engines. That's normal. Bots check boards to refer the contents.
