First of all the events that took place at My Lai in 1968 are gruesome and horrific.
Secondly the army cover-up and the injustice of the subsequent acquittals is shocking.
Thirdly the parallels between My Lai and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are all too clear.
Fourthly, the reactions of the American posters at ADT to John Thomas' post are beyond belief.

The American approach is roughly this:

1. The US electorate have the right to vote into office anyone they want, even if he is a warmonger (this is called "democracy")

2. The US government has the right to initiate offensive wars (this is called "protecting America's global interests")

3. The US military has the right to use the most devastating weaponry against enemy and civilian targets (this is within the US "rules of engagement")

4. The US military staff en the judiciary have the right to cover up any wrongdoing and give legal immunity to the perpetrators (this is within the "investigative and prosecutorial discretion" of the US military and the courts)

5. The US media have the right to portray disgraceful events in such a patriottic way that the American citizens are proud of their government and their military (this is called "press freedom").

So in the end we have a third world country like Vietnam or Iraq or Afghanistan devastated by the US military, with an enormous number of civilian victims, yet no American should ever be held accountable for it or even feel some sort of remorse. The victims are Untermenschen, not one American should go to prison for slaughtering them in the name of freedom.
