Well I am not a great fan of classics at all but I do like music with melody. M Varese doesn't seem to give you much in the way of melody.

Yes it's not his main aim...
most of his composition are atonal or have pieces of melody scattered using ordered sequences...
just another way of writing music.

Randy Newman is truly a great All-round musician...

The two albums that have been my faves in the 2000's, that I know by heart but that are still full of great surprises are Sasha & Digweed's Northern Exposure 1 and 2.

As for the past, I could mention XTC's "Skylarking", The Charlatans' "Between the 7th and the 11th", "The Stone Roses".

This not counting The Velvet Underground, The Stooges, Sonic Youth, Beastie Boys, Patti Smith etc. that are beyond all that.

Currently my favourite music is goth/doom metal. I listen a lot to bands like Draconian, Tristania, Sirenia, Penumbra, Theatre of Tragedy, After Forever.

However my musical taste is much broader than that. Over the years I have listened to different stuff and now I have 1000+ CDs in my collection.

Some other music that I like:
* classic rock: Led Zeppelin, Doors, Neil Young & Crazy Horse
* prog/sympho: Yes, UK, King Crimson
* metal: Soundgarden, Monster Magnet, Queensryche
* world: Dead Can Dance, McKennitt, Vas
* medieval: Estampie, La Reverdie

As for my LEAST favorite:

REM, Coldplay (fucking lamers) and the worst-of-the-worst-ever, Pearl Jam.

With the band i was in during the mid '90 i played their music a whole lot.

I liked them at first...now i can't stand even a single song...

Anyway after a few hours of sleep i have to agree that "Ten" was a good record...

I really liked the so-called "grunge" genre. There were a lot of good Seattle bands at the time: Soundgarden, Alice in chains, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Mudhoney, Mother Love Bone, Truly, Temple of the Dog.

I also liked "grunge" back at the times but in the long run i ended up dumping most of those bands...
Only two i still listen to sometimes are Soundgarden (up to Bad Motorfinger)
and mostly Alice in Chains.
The latters where probably the most interesting of all the bunch...very dark low pitched guitars, intricate
and well layered rhythmic patterns and the low atmosferic and sometimes slightly dissonant vocals of
the sadly departed Layne Staley.
Their first LP "Facelift" remains a little masterpiece in the genere.

Well I don't like them but i don't hate them!

What I did love was Eddie Vedder's work with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan on the "Dead Man Walking" soundtrack. The extended tracks on the proper soundtrack CD are wonderful. Add to that Ry Cooder's involvement and you have one of the best "world" music CDs ever.

Even if you hate Pearl Jam (and perhaps especially if you do), you should give this a listen.
