I think Caroline was a special case, with very particular interests, such as 70's teen stuff, preserving 8mm films, feminism & porn. Oh no, I am still here, but only rarely. The title "eurobabeindex" is a little deceiving, because there are almost no dutch or scandinavian models. Yes, yes, you two are on to a basic insight that i have been pondering from time to time over the last few years. Relations between the sexes are governed at a very profound level by atavistic instincts about breeding, security, pleasure & desire. I even blogged on the general subject of male promiscuity (the "harem instinct"), but have never worked out the implications for the porn collecting tendencies of the modern male. Here's a rehash of some of what i've written with some revision & elaboration.

Men are by nature promiscuous, not because they have an abstract conception of genetics (that is purely instinctual), but because of basic motivations of survival & power. Men attempt to secure as many female mates as possible & reasonable over his active career. This ensures many male offspring to augment his clan or "household", strengthening his position vis-a-vis his rivals and enhancing his prestige among his friends (he also has daughters to marry off to secure alliances). Of course, offspring are also expected to provide for the parent in old age.

Men collect things that are useful and attractive for them, the prehistoric hunter-gatherer drive. Women bring a lot to the table, not the least of which is sexual pleasure. But unlike other commodities, women are fellow human-beings, with equally strong if somewhat different motivations. A woman wants a male who's strong, prosperous and enamored of her so that he will provide for her and protect her and their offspring, and favor her and her children over other women in the clan/household. Though monogamy is the norm today, patriarchal & matriarchal polygamy have been prevalent modes of family organization in various societies...

Anyway, so yes, porn collecting is a contemporary manifestation, an atavism, of deep-seated male instincts. With porn the object has become completely (re-)commodified, so that "sex", even masturbation, is just another financial transaction, whether it's cash, barter or theft. Very romantic, i know, but when you really start to analyze porn, it's not just some superficial phenomenon. It's a huge business and says a lot about ourselves, our culture & society.
